Asphalt Emulsion: What you Should Know

Asphalt emulsionAsphalt has become a commonly used material throughout society that many of us will see at least once each day. Between pathways, driveways, parking lots, and roadways, asphalt has become a popular construction and pavement material that many of us have no begun to take for granted. While asphalt has become a more convenient material to use than others, like concrete, it still comes with its own set of problems and inconveniences. For this reason, more construction companies and asphalt contractors are searching for ways to make asphalt easier to use and manage. One technique they have begun to use is asphalt emulsion. While asphalt emulsion is known to bring benefits, many aren’t exactly sure what asphalt emulsion is.

Asphalt Emulsion-What is it?

Asphalt emulsion is the term used to describe when asphalt cement is dropped in a solution of water and a soap agent to prevent bonds from being formed. The mixture of soap, asphalt, and water then becomes easier to spread and quick to dry. The mixture starts out being a thick, brown mixture that may not seem like asphalt, but it will then dry to a more natural asphalt appearance. Once this occurs, the substance is considered a broken emulsion and it begins the second phase. As the emulsion begins to dry, the water that is holding the asphalt begins to evaporate and the cement is then able to bond with the asphalt. Once this has occurs, the asphalt is considered to be set and it can be used. Because of its quick drying time, asphalt emulsion can be used only two hours after it has been laid.

Asphalt Emulsion- What does it do?

Asphalt emulsion is most often used for specialty jobs where a certain type of asphalt is required. Some jobs that require asphalt emulsion are those that take place where lower temperatures occur often. Areas that experience high levels of fog as well as cold temperatures  can use asphalt emulsion because they compliment the moisture found within the asphalt. Emulsified asphalt also tends to give off negative ions, which makes the surface less likely to give off static.
