Now that the calendar has officially flipped to spring, it’s time to get serious about spring cleaning. While everyone else is hustling and bustling to dust their armoires and wash their windows, we’ll be outside enjoying the beautiful weather and repairing asphalt across Maryland and northern Virginia. When you’re writing your spring cleaning to-do list, don’t forget to include a line that says “Call Testa Paving.”
Spring Asphalt Maintenance
To keep your parking lot or driveway happy and healthy for as long as possible, you’ll need to establish some type of regular maintenance. Here are some things that need to be taken care of:
- Repairs: The first step is to address any damage that may have popped up over the winter, because the longer it goes untreated and unfixed, the more likely it is to get bigger, get worse, and get more expensive to fix when you finally get around to it. Winter can really take a toll on asphalt, from abrasion from de-icing salts to cracking from the freeze/thaw cycle. Spring and winter are also pothole season, so if any have already started to form, those should be filled in immediately as well. Cracks and holes in your asphalt can be dangerous for both motorists and pedestrians
- Seal coat: Seal coating is a hugely important step in maintaining the longevity of your asphalt surface. A fresh seal coat is recommended every three or four years, and spring is the perfect time to take care of that need. With fresh asphalt repairs taken care of, and ideal weather conditions (on most days), a seal coat will lock in that freshness and protect your asphalt from damage from UV rays, weather, and regular traffic wear and tear.
