Today is Earth Day — a time to stop and think about the planet Earth, how we’re affecting it, and how we can prevent some of the harm that’s being done to it. Since 1970, Earth Day has given people around the world an opportunity to do their part to keep the planet healthy for years and years to come. At Testa Paving, we wanted to see what we could do in the way of environmentally friendly asphalt maintenance. Here’s what we came up with.
Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Asphalt
The first thing you can do to help Mother Nature with your asphalt choices is to, well, choose the right asphalt! Choosing porous asphalt is important in protecting the environment and saving a couple bucks in the process. Porous asphalt allows water to drain through the surface, through the sub-base, and into the soil below, like it normally would. This allows all natural rainwater processes to continue taking place, keeping the environment just the way it should be.
Environmentally Friendly Asphalt Maintenance
There’s one big, overarching theme that we came up with for asphalt maintenance, and that is that you should always be sure to use non-toxic products for upkeep. In the winter, choosing sand over de-icing chemicals gives you a natural solution that won’t have those abrasive salt chemicals running off into the ground and streams and such. (Thankfully we won’t have to worry about de-icing salts for a while.) Additionally, refer back to a blog we wrote a few weeks ago about the ongoing coal-tar sealant ban that’s been put into effect in a few Maryland counties. Lastly, the best thing you can do for environmentally friendly asphalt maintenance is…to actually maintain it! The better care you give your asphalt, the longer it will last, meaning you won’t have to repave. Tons of resources are saved by reducing asphalt production. Studies have shown that if all asphalt was properly maintained, global CO2 emissions could be reduced by over one billion tons each year. That’s a 3% annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.Those numbers speak for themselves.
