Ohh, the weather outside is frightful…. Like, really frightful. With weather experts’ predictions ranging from just a foot to storm-of-the-century caliber, the mid-Atlantic is in full Snowmageddon prep mode. Snow removal, whether personal or commercial, will be out en force starting tomorrow. However, when keeping winter asphalt care in mind, you’ll want to take a little extra caution out with you when you tackle your driveway or parking lot.
Shovel Well and Shovel Carefully
Shoveling is clearly the first step in snow removal. However, before you start digging away to uncover your driveway, keep asphalt care in mind. Using a metal-tipped shovel can damage your asphalt, especially if there were already some cracks or holes in the surface. A plastic edge on your shovel is much less likely to do any damage. It’s also important to tackle snow removal quickly — hopefully before the snow settles into your asphalt, making it harder to remove effectively.
Nix the Salt
We’ve written about it before, but it’s worth repeating for the sake of proper asphalt care. Commercial de-icing salts are corrosive to the surfaces they rest on, and asphalt is no different. We’ll also mention again the dangers of the freeze/thaw cycle. Asphalt is porous surface. When you melt away the ice that remains after snow removal, it seeps into the asphalt, refreezes and expands, and can potentially rupture the surface or lead to potholes. Sand is a much safer and environmentally friendly solution, just be aware of refreezing when temperatures drop again at night.
Snow Plows Coming Through!
Although they’re quite effective and efficient, snow plows often come barreling through parking lots and residential streets without necessarily the keenest eye for asphalt care. You’ll be vulnerable to similar scraping damage mentioned in the shovel section. It’s also a good idea to mark curbs or existing damage, so the drivers don’t create or worsen any problems.
